I believe this would be the proper place to start a thread on this subject and would like to hear everyone's different ways of dealing with said problems where the scanning of either item results in spiky, oatmeal scan models or no models at all. To scan black or shiny objects without ruining the object being scanned with spray paint or paint in general I've been using Tinactin foot powder to cover the objects but have found with this stuff it's really hard to clean off and always leaves a residue so I'm looking to try something new if anyone has had better times with something else.

The best I have come up with is some paint that is made for the movie industry that is extremely water soluable. It has it's issues here in the Pacific Northwest but works well.

its realy down to the scanning system, one way it you use matt Hiar spray
but needs water to get off, talc is fun but a real pain to shift after I use the O2 sparys for cleaning keybords shifs that stuff a trat from cracks.

3d scannings more of a craft than an Art.

we all have tricks for doing stuff, me now I would spay the black Shinny thing like this .........

Try scanning CLass, Im not jocking what I say I know a way how with out coving it.

I have been using a generic crack detection spray that is a very thin white powdery layer that wipes off very easily. I picked up a case of it from the local welding shop. It's also known as developer by some people.

We use that stuff. AWSOME! It's just ultra-fine talc in an aerosol can.

Magnaflux Spot Check!

Get it at www.Grainger.com

After years in the photographic industry, I always rely on Krylon Dulling Spray. Sprays on most surfaces and is easily wiped off. Never had it harm any surfaces.
This is their info:

* Wipes off non-porous items without a trace
* Semi-drying

Dry to Touch
15 minutes

We also use the MagnaFlux SKD-S2 spot developer or Helling Spray from Germany which can be difficult to obtain.

Scanning technology has also improved in measuring dark colored or shiny surfaces. It's just about seeing the results on your part.

I would say for the people using spray coatings you may want to do some accuracy tests especially when used for engineering applications.

I use Ambersil Flaw Detector - White Powder

Again a product developed for Crack Detection however when applied in a light coat will add a matter of microns to the surface. I have tested certain sprays which have added a coating to question the accuracy of the scan results.

For jewellery and things the spray can be cleaned using ultrasonic bath etc.
