Hello.

I work in a kayak production company and we have a Konica Minolta Vivid 910 3d scanner that we use to scan prototypes of kayaks. The problem we are facing now is on the alignment. We use the PET software from Konica Minolta for alignment but in the end the kayak is shorter on 10 cm. We have the scanner on a rigid bar and it moves along the lenght of the boat. Also we use ping pong balls has reference points for the alignment.

Any sugestions?

Cheers

I would sugest using a software package to aquire your scans and for n-point registration, post processing, etc---Rapidform, Polyowrks, and Geomagic are the top three for this. However, they are not cheap. I am scanning in artifiacts with the Vivid 9i and found that using the PET diminished overall quality.

Hello and thanks for the reply.

Is it possible to scan a part directly with geomagic? What does geomagic needs to comunicate with the vivid 910?

Cheers

You can scan each section and export them individually. Each section would need at least 3 reference points for further alignment (I suggest 4 points and ball bearings would be more accurate than ping pong balls). In Geomagic, you will be able to realign each section really precisely using the reference points (ping pong balls). In order to do that, you would need to scan the same reference points in the subsequent scans (overlap between scans). You could also do the exact same thing in Rapidform or Polyworks.

On the hardware side, there are scanners on the market with the capability to self-position so you don't have to realign the scans afterwards:

Example of a scan of a canoe... not for design purposes but still...
