Anyone here have any experience with making your own 3D laser scanner?

I have been looking at http://www.muellerr.ch/engineering/laserscanner/default.htm and http://www.david-laserscanner.com/ but so far have not settled on a solution, but I am ultimately hoping to build something like the Polhemus FastScan Cobra http://inition.co.uk/inition/product.php?URL_=product_digiscan_polhemus_fastscancobra&SubCatID_=30
- a scanner that works like a virtual spray-can.

..anyway, if anyone here has any experience whatsoever from making their own 3d laser scanner, or know of good resources about the topic, I would love to hear about it.

Lets see now
you want a 30 thousand dollar cobra capability but for the price of a ten dollar david laser set up. That is a pretty broad range. Most important question would have to be what would you use it for??? If you want to scan model cars planes etc to include them in a game then the methods of david laser scanner should be more than sufficient. I have the trial version but it is a real pain in the butt to use very intollerant of anything but perfect lighting. In the display window you can see your laser casting the line you want but most of the points are dropped out by the unbelievably picky software. If you are a programmer you should be able to write simple workable code to gather points from a series of photo exposures in a movie file made with fixed laser and moving or rotating object. I doubt that it would require more than three or four pages of code in simplest form. They ask if we want to take part in such a project on this forum unfortunately most of those who say yes will be engineers or softwatre geeks so it will turn out to be 500 pages of unnecessary code instead and won't work well either.
Good luck
