My company is considering the purchase of a laser scanner. We are deciding between a Leica Scanstation 2 and a Trimble GX. I am looking for the pros or cons of either of them so we get the best value for our money. Any information would be greatlly appreciated.
Thanks.

The Trimble GX is more like a conversional total station with scanning capabilaties, it is not a true scanner and not efficient.
The scan station 2 is a good stable scanner. There is a new leica scanner the C10, which you may like to take a look at.

It depends on what you want to scan. Long range = time of flight, Short range = phase

The GX is not a conversional total station, it's a true scanner. You are referring to the VX which is a robotic total station with scanning capabilities. The FX is Trimble's phase based scanner.

You need to take any advice you get in stride taking in mind that most people don't have relative experience with all scanners. If you can get advice from someone who has experience with both types you are looking at then I would consider that advice but in the end you have to go with the scanner you think works best for you and not the scanner that someone recommends over another. I trust you have researched the scanners and had each prospective company come in to give you a demo of what their hardware and software have to offer?

Gizmo,

What are you acquiring a laser scanner for?
If it is for facilities or short range scanning (<100') a phase base scaner like the Leica HDS, a Z+F or a Faro will be your aim.

If it is for medium range (between 5 and 1000') think Riegl VZ400, Leica C10 or Optech Ilris.

It all depends on your application. The Optech workflow is abysmal. The Leica C10 is still a beta, the Riegl VZ400 is more expensive.

You have to consider range, time and precision...
