What do you use to dull finish of metal when scanning with laser?
Hi I'm using a Metron laser to scan parts my company makes. This is an inspection process that compares the actual part to CAD data, so some what of a reverse engineering function.
Metron supplied Tinactin foot powder spray to dull the finish. I'm wondering if there are other options.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

| I think a dark womans makeup foundation that was lightly dusted on would work. |

Hi Jim,
Makeup does work, but can get expensive and messy. Try spray painting a flat white. If it is unpaintable, try some MagnaFlux. Magnaflux is an acetone spray that create a layer of white film which can be dusted off.
Hope that helps. _________________ Andrew McEwen

Magnaflux - developper powder spray is the best. You will find that in welding supplier stores.
As an alternative, you can also use Krylon products:
Krylon Marking Chalk: available in some Home Depot
Krylon Dulling Spray: available in art supplies store
You can try also foot powder in spray (like Tinactin). It works well and the smell is great . But you have to use a lot in order to make it work. |

I have been scanning since 97 and have used a number of different sprays and coatings. I have used white light and laser scanners for my work.
I personally would stay clear of Magnaflux, it's not the nicest thing to work with and it can react with some plastics I have found.
The spray I am using now is TIEDE-PEN DL-20 it is a developer spray, very fine and gives a nice even coat. You still need to wear a mask with it in confind spaces, it a lot safer then some on the market. It also does not drift that much in your working area.
Any spray will get into stone chips on vehicle paint, once it gets under the lacquer it can cause some damage. I generally use watered down poster paint on vehicles I am scanning, it does no damage to the body work and it just needs to be washed off at the end. |
